Volans

Volans: A constellation in the southern sky that represents a flying fish. It was created by Petrus Plancius from the observations of Dutch navigators in the late 16th century.
Name and History: The original name was Piscis Volans, but it was shortened to Volans by John Herschel in 1844. The constellation was often depicted as accompanying the ship Argo Navis, and being chased by Dorado.
Stars and Planets: The constellation has two double stars, Gamma Volantis and Epsilon Volantis, and a sunlike star with a planet, HD 76700. The variable stars R and S Volantis were in need of observations in 2003.
Deep-Sky Objects: The constellation contains several galaxies, such as the Lindsay-Shapley ring, a ring galaxy formed by a collision, NGC 2442, an intermediate-spiral galaxy, and Graham's Object, another ring galaxy.
